Arthur Kill Road Bridge over Arthur Kill Stream

The existing Arthur Kill Road bridge needs total replacement. The new bridge is to be a single span, multi-stringer steel bridge spanning 35 ft over the Arthur Kill Stream. The new bridge will be about 5 ft higher than the existing one, requiring rising of the approach roadway grades.

YU & Associates, was retained to provide geotechnical engineering services including subsurface investigation and geotechnical evaluation to determine an appropriate foundation system for the bridge abutment, the impact of the consolidation settlement of the approach roadways and the potential slope stability of the raised roadway embankments. Over 15 ft of soft clay with organic inclusions were found to exist beneath the project site. The use of light weight fill and surcharge with wick-drains were studied as alternatives for stabilizing the roadway embankment. Cost effective treated timber piles were recommended to be used to support the bridge abutments. Seismic and liquefaction potential were evaluated, and site preparation and construction issues were addressed in the Geotechnical Report.
