The Essex Sportsplex Parking Garage is located at the intersection of McCarter Highway and Bridge Street adjacent to the Newark Bears Stadium. This four-story parking garage accommodates 496 parking spaces, providing parking needs for the Bears Stadium and the vicinity. YU & Associates (YU) provided geotechnical, environmental and site engineering services for the design team.
Historic site use for residential, commercial and industrial facilities posted significant engineering challenges to the project team. On-site former buildings were demolished down to the ground level with the basement walls and foundations left intact or partially demolished. The former basements were then filled with demolition rubble and debris. YU performed a subsurface investigation involving borings and test pits, evaluated the subsurface conditions, recommended the type of foundation, established foundation design criteria, developed site preparation procedures, and provided construction support including controlled inspection of PDA pile load test and production pile installation. The use of geofabric reinforcement as recommended by YU permitted only partial removal of demolition rubble, resulting in an economical floor sub grade preparation.
YU also performed environmental engineering services involving the preparation of a Remedial Action Work Plan (RAWP), Remedial Action Report (RAR) and a Deed Notice. YU also performed site design including utilities grading and drainage, Stormwater management measures, and Passaic County right of way approvals.
