Express Rail Intermodal Transfer Facility

This project involved expansion and upgrading of the existing 32- acre cargo facility at the Elizabeth Port Marine Terminal. The land on which Elizabeth port is located was originally virgin marshlands. The marshland was reclaimed for the development of the Port during the 1950's and 1960's. The subsurface at the site include highly compressible organic soils. Long term settlement became one of the key considerations in the design. The proposed facility will require a pavement to support very high wheel loadings.

Yu & Associates, Inc. (YU) supervised the field investigation that consisted of soil borings, auger probes, and test pits. YU evaluated subsurface conditions and potential long term settlement. A review of site surcharge stabilization was made. YU also designed the pavement section for forklifts requiring a single wheel load of 100 kips, determined RR tack ballast and sub-ballast thickness and sub grade preparation procedures. Additionally, foundation recommendations were made for the 100 foot high light masts and new administration building.
