John Dewey High School

The athletic field of John Dewey High School was rehabilitated under the Take the Field Program, a private public partnership to revitalize the school fields. The athletic field is located along Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

YU & Associates, Inc. (YU) reviewed historical Sanborn and USGS maps, and identified that the site was a reclaimed marsh land formerly occupied by commercial and industrial facilities. YU performed subsurface investigation for the geotechnical and environmental purposes, identified areas of contaminated soil.

The investigation revealed presence of oil stained contaminated fill in localized pockets, and old building footings and construction debris throughout the site. YU recommended capping the site with Geofabric layer overlain by clean material with artificial turf, or relatively impermeable asphalt pavement. This approach saved the owner a substantial amount in remediation costs and shortened the construction schedule. YU also provided air monitoring during the construction phase of the project and submitted remedial action report to the NYSDEC.
