Life Sciences Center / Addition to Olson Hall

Rutgers University wanted to combine the Chemistry, Biology and Neuroscience programs that were spread out through other campus facilities. This new 60,000 sf six story addition to Olson Hall was constructed to meet that goal.

YU & Associates, Inc. (YU) provided site/civil and geotechnical engineering services for this project at this busy urban campus. The urban campus environment meant that numerous utilities existed immediately adjacent to the proposed building, requiring temporary supports during the basement construction. YU performed subsurface investigation and provided foundation and earthwork recommendations for the proposed construction. Because of the proximity of the existing building, the proposed building foundations had to be evaluated and lowered accordingly to avoid increasing stresses on the existing structure. Site/Civil Engineering services included designs for the relocation of existing utilities, grading and storm water management design and regulatory permitting.
