LIRR Mineola Intermodal Center

Since customer demand for parking far exceeded the number of spaces available in the existing surface parking lots in the vicinity of Mineola Station, Long Island Railroad (LIRR) supplement existing parking spaces by constructing a four level Intermodal center and parking structure adjacent to LIRR’s Mineola Station. YU & Associates, provided geotechnical and site/civil engineering services for the design-build team.

The parking structure contained about 1000 parking spaces and included an Intermodal area to accommodate buses from MTA Long Island Bus. The project also included an enclosed pedestrian overpass connecting to the westbound platform. YU was selected as part of the design team to perform subsurface geotechnical investigations, prepare a geotechnical report, provide design parameters and procedures for the construction of foundations, and placement of backfill material. YU also prepared site/civil construction documents and obtained all necessary regulatory approvals from New York State DEC, Village of Mineola, and Nassau County. A below grade Stormwater storage/retention system was designed within the garage footprint to meet the State and County Stormwater requirements for infiltration recharge and water quality.
