Long Island Aquarium Project

A $58-million aquarium had been planned by a nonprofit group to revitalize downtown Bay Shore, New York but the board of the Long Island Aquarium decided to relocate the proposed location to Brentwood, NY. The aquarium will contain Open Ocean Tank, Coral Reef Tank, Rocky Reef Tank and Imax Theater. The entire aquarium will be built to the west of Crooked Hill Road, at the former Pilgrim state mental hospital on approximately 43,000 square feet and is proposed to be 100 feet tall.

YU & Associates, Inc (YU) performed a geotechnical study to ensure that the subsurface conditions are favorable for the proposed aquarium. The project involved completing a comprehensive subsurface investigation and evaluation and calculation of lateral earth pressures for the retaining walls, basement walls, aquarium tanks and settlement. Also provided recommendations for installing a permanent well in the aquarium and provide remedial measures to minimize future settlements.
