Malcolm X. Shabazz Athletic Facility

In an effort to improve athletic facilities within the City of Newark School system, the Newark Public School (NPS) Board identified a need for a new athletic facility at the Malcolm X. Shabazz High School. The NPS vision included development of a state of the art football field/track facility with viewing stands to accommodate 7,000 spectators; softball fields and tennis courts, as well as ancillary concessions and locker areas. Located on a 20-acre site adjacent to the high school, the project requires the vacation of several city streets, utility relocations, demolition of existing buildings, and extensive excavation and filling. This $6 million dollar complex when completed will be the premier athletic facility for the NPS system.

YU & Associates (YU) provided the site, civil, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering services and regulatory approvals for this project. In the role of geotechnical engineering, YU conducted a subsurface investigation involving borings and test pits. Geotechnical issues included variable subsurface conditions, the presence of fill in former basements, new foundations, existing and new retaining walls, changes to existing elevations and earthwork.
