MSU Rail Station & Parking Garage

The Montclair State University Rail Station and Garage was constructed by NJ Transit to provide direct access to New York City for commuters from Northern New Jersey. The seven-story, 1,500 car garage is within the MSU campus and serves both commuters and the University. YU & Associates, Inc (YU) provided site/civil traffic, geotechnical and environmental engineering services for this design/build project

YU provided civil construction documents for NJ Transit, NJ Department of Community Affairs, Passaic County, and Soil Conservation District approvals. The site design included site layout, utility design, storm water management utilizing two detention basins, soil erosion controls, signing and striping, grading as well as concrete, gabion and Keystone retaining wall designs.

The off-site improvements associated with this project included the realignment of 2000 feet of Clove Road, a County Road. The road was designed in accordance with all County and AASHTO standards and traffic was continually maintained via a four stage maintenance and protection of traffic scheme. YU designed traffic signals at two intersections to direct traffic entering and exiting the garage from Clove Road.

YU performed subsurface investigations and geotechnical engineering evaluations for the foundation systems related to this project. In addition, free product and soil contamination was discovered during construction. YU performed the environmental evaluation and waste classification of the free product and soil contamination. YU prepared Remedial Investigation and Remedial Actions Reports to obtain a No Further Action statement from NJDEP.
