New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 12 Improvements

The NJ Turnpike Authority plans to expand Interchange 12 to upgrade the existing 7 toll lanes to 14 lanes, and construct a new flyover structure over an existing rail line. The subsurface investigation included environmental and geotechnical borings for a ramp to span over the Carteret Landfill.

YU & Associates (YU) coordinated and performed the controlled inspection for over 200 soil and rock borings totaling 3,500 linear feet. As part of the ramp design study, bridge foundation borings and cross-hole seismic borings were performed.

YU prepared the Geotechnical Engineering Study for the design of retaining walls including a summary study and evaluation of various wall types. YU provided engineering recommendations which included design parameters, lateral pressures on walls, estimate of potential settlements of structures, slope stability of embankment fill, liquefaction potential, temporary excavation support and dewatering considerations during construction.
