New Settlement School & Community Center

The partially occupied 1.7-ac site is to be developed as a 4-story school and community center complex with a full basement. An indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and community center are among the facilities to be constructed. As a subconsultant to the Architect, YU & Associates (YU) provided site/civil engineering design and geotechnical engineering services. Stormwater management, utility connections, variable subsurface conditions, and proximity to a NYC Transit elevated subway structure are the key site and geotechnical concerns. YU prepared site plans and specifications for permit application, bidding and construction. YU also completed the geotechnical investigation and foundation evaluation for the project. In the Geotechnical Engineering Report, YU presented the site conditions, historic land use, regional and site geology, and subsurface conditions. The nearby elevated subway structure, proposed basement, variable depth and quality of bedrock, unsuitable fill material, groundwater impact, foundation design, lateral earth pressures, excavation support, and subgrade preparation were discussed. As part of their responsibilities, YU also provided engineering support and consultation services during construction.
