Newark City Subway Extension

The project involves a one-mile extension of the Newark City Subway System from Newark to Bloomfield via Belleville. The proposed construction included a vehicle base facility, two stations, park-and-ride, a substation, catenary poles, and retaining structures.

YU & Associates, Inc. (YU) conducted a subsurface investigation involving historic land use search, borings and test pits. The investigation revealed the existence of several buried structures, construction debris and former tracks. The construction of the vehicle base facility required demolition of large industrial buildings, removal of associated foundation elements, abandoned tracks, and replacement of unsuitable materials. YU developed several foundation alternatives including piles and footings with ground improvement. The final foundation system involved supporting the buildings on footings after ground improvement.

Several retaining wall types such as sheet pile, soldier pile with lagging and modular walls were evaluated. A modular wall was selected for construction during a time window when the existing tracks were put out of service. YU was retained to provide additional services for monitoring during excavation and backfill below groundwater, and foundation and retaining wall construction.
